ROBBIN aluminium folding chair

The Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs was looking for a simple and light folding chair to be used in the Dutch consulate in Tokyo during concerts and lectures.

In collaboration with an Eindhoven-based producer, ‘the’ folding chair was stripped-down to create a light weight, easy to produce chair. Robin is constructed mostly of standardised parts. The pattern of holes in the backrest and seat is a tribute to Robin Day, the designer of the first plastic chair, which had a pattern of holes in the backrest. This chair became the first in a series of design icons: in 1939 Swiss designer Hans Coray made the beautiful Landi chair with a punctured backrest, closely followed by Rietveld’s version in 1943. In 1989, fellow Dutch designer Gijs Bakker made his legendary chair Gatenstoel — translated as chair with holes — which was perforated throughout. DesignNL’s Robin chair stands strongly on the shoulders of these icons.
Robin’s key details are the hinges that connect the legs. Silicon studs and the nylon ball-bearing ensure that the chairs can be unfolded quietly — for when the audience comes in late. The chair can easily be stacked in a corner of your living room as extra seating — though for its sleek design you will not want to story it away at all!
